AMSTERDAM The 33rd edition of the ING Amsterdam Marathon has been won by the Kenian runner Paul Kirui in 2.07.51. Second became the Ethiopian athlete Chala Dechase, for whom it was his debut. Robert Cheboror finished third. The womensrace was won by Lydia Cheromei in 2.25.27.
Although the temperature was excellent for marathon running, there was a lot of wind on the course that annoyed the athletes. The 28-year old Paul Kiprop Kirui could fight as the best against the circumstances and can add this win to his ,already, impressive list. In 2004 he became Worldchampion half marathon and in 2006 he was fifth at the best-marathoners list with his personal best of 2.06.44. Last year the Kenian became fourth in Amsterdam. This year he ran a more tactical race: When I heard, after 37 km, that the second group came closer, I decided to go away by myself. No one could really follow, he explained. Only the shy Ethiopian runner Chala Dechase, who fought himself from a backwards position into the front, could chase Kirui. In 2.08.31 he became second in a great debut. Dechase started training seriously last year when he participated in a group of Ethiopian runners lead by former topathlete Getaneh Tessema.
Robert Cheboror won in 2004 the Amsterdam Marathon in a personal best time of 2.06.23, but had to be satisfied with a third place in 2.09.13.
The womensrace was won by a young Kenian mother, who made her debut today in a great time of 2.25.27. Lydia Cheromei: I became a stronger athlete after my baby was born. She gives me power. I am very happy with this time and my win.
