"Just finished JUNUT (Jurasteig Nonstop Ultra Trail) last weekend, and was lucky again to win the race".

“Jurasteig” is a 230km hiking trail in Franconian Jura located in central Bavaria, which is famous for spectacular landscape and challenging climbing sites. When I ran JUNUT last year, I was constantly amazed by the stunning cliffs, beautiful valleys, and numerous castles standing on the peaks like in a fairy tale.

My journey to JUNUT 2013 was a bit adventurous. My luggage failed to catch up with my connecting flight at Hamburg, so I had to wait at Nuremberg Airport for one night to get my luggage. Fortunately it finally worked out and I could reach the start line one and a half hours before the race started. The course is quite technical, and runners need to deal with all kinds of challenges such as rocky cliffs, muddy slippery downhill, marshland, dark woods in the night, navigation problems, etc; this year we also experienced bad weather such as heavy cold rain, hails, and icy cold nights. I had a rather bad start: Got cramps on both legs around km10 (rather weird since I hadn’t such experience for more than 10 years), and at km 60 my right ankle was twisted over the wet rocks. Then I tried to slow down, fortunately, it seemed that I could get used to the pains after some time.

3.5 hours better than my own course record
The number of participants rose from 38 (12 finishers) last year to 69 (23 finishers) this year, good runners from Germany, France, Italy, and Switzerland made JUNUT 2013 very competitive. Last year I was running alone in the front after km 26, but this year there were always runners chasing behind until km 195. After a brief stop at the checkpoint, I felt very good and decided to accelerate for the last 35 kilometers. In the end I reached the finish line around 2:30 am, Sunday morning, finishing the race with 36 hours 25 minutes, which is 3.5 hours better than my own course record and 1.5 hours in front of the second place. The finish rate did not improve much this year, although the time limit has been relaxed from 47 hours last year to 52 hours – it is obviously the evidence showing how challenging the course is.

It was a wonderful race and nonstop sightseeing tour, and also an event with great family atmosphere. The race is organized by veteran ultra-runner Gerhard Börner and his  family, and the checkpoints are operated by local runners, administration, as well as the families of JUNUT participants. It is such great people that made JUNUT an exciting and attractive trail festival.
